I was rewatching Gossip Girl season four and I figured a few things out for myself that reeeeally annoyed me.
First, Louis was such a great guy! He was such a sweet, wonderful perfect prince and someone that genuinely cared about Blair. I mean, I’m definitely a dair shipper (even sort of a chair shipper) but Louis was a stand up guy and I would have been decently okay with it if Blair ended up with him.
But then season five comes along and BAM. He becomes an asshole because…. why? NO REASON. Gossip Girl wrote themselves into a corner, needed more drama and made him the super douche of the year. UGH.
And second, Chuck and Blair had such a good end to their relationship at the end of season four (except the whole pregnancy test thing). They resolved their issues from the whole hotel incident, didn’t hate each other, could be in a room together without scheming and belittling each other. He saved her life, they had a fun night crashing a party and then getting it on, admitted they loved each other and what-not but then decided they were better apart.
WHOA. How mature of them both, that’s incredible and shows the growth behind the characters. They know they love each other, but the accept that it’s not a healthy love. Wooooo. Go team.
BUT NOPE. JOKES ON EVERYONE. Season five hits and they are right back into their on-and-off “I love you so much but we can’t be together because of (insert meaningless excuse of the week).” Instead of just remembering what they had decided at the end of season four it’s magically all forgotten and they just love each other so damn much they’ve gotta fuck everything up for a chance to be together only to just not fucking be together. They should’ve stayed broken up and then had a healthy relationship apart to get back together finally in a stable and respectful relationship. BUT NO. They are back in their bullshit relationship again.
Third, Dan and Blair having their relationship built up through season four, and season five until their best friends. Honestly, they seem like better friends than Serena and Blair are and holy hell I love them together. Penn and Leighton have mad chemistry together and it’s awesome. They have some of the funniest and most entertaining scenes together for both seasons and are a huge reason as to why I am still watching this show.
And then they were dating!!
Unfortunately it was probably one of the biggest let downs in Gossip Girl history. Fuck. The writers had so carefully worked up Dan’s feelings and it was a huge arc for him. He was in love with her since half way through season four and then it took two episodes for Blair to be in love with Dan. There definitely wasn’t enough exploring Blair’s changing feelings and it felt like they jumped in too fast to me. And then they were dating and the relationship had changed completely, suddenly they didn’t have the same chemistry and draw that had been there before.
I don’t know what it was, maybe the writing or the acting or everything that was going on at the same time but it was just gone. I looooove Dan and Blair and have wanted them to get together for so long but the reality just sucked so bad. And their break up?! What the fuck was that?! Obviously they weren’t going to be together forever, Chuck and Blair have always been endgame but it would have been nice to get something with a little more closure or more satisfying then that mess of an episode. Or maybe something that meant they could get back to being friends… Fucking lame.
This show is a mess, but I just can’t stop watching it. Hopefully they clean things up this season. Obviously fixing up Louis is just not going to happen, but hopefully otherwise things will be worked out.
